Overview
A malformation of the hip joint where the ball and socket fit poorly, leading to wear and arthritis over time. Most common in large and giant breeds.
Common signs & symptoms
- • limping
- • stiffness after rest
- • reluctance to jump
- • swaying gait
🛡️ Prevention
Choose breeders who screen breeding stock, keep puppies lean, feed an appropriate large-breed growth diet, and avoid over-exercising growing joints.
🚩 When to see a vet
See a vet if you notice persistent limping, difficulty rising, or reduced activity — earlier management slows progression.
